Following an OJEU tender process, Environtec was awarded a 4 year contract to manage the Metropolitan Police Service’s assets and to support and improve operational safety practices.

Project: Asbestos Management Services

Client: Metropolitan Police Service

Sector: Emergency Services

Location: London

Duration: 4 Years

Project Value: £1m

The contract with the Metropolitan Police Service represents the flagship contract delivered from the head office in Essex.

The contract involves the surveying and identification of asbestos containing materials within the wide range of assets managed by the Service and to ensure that known asbestos containing materials are regularly monitored. The remit also includes offering a wide range of support on asbestos compliance requirements including contaminated land, asbestos policy and procedural documentation, training etc.

Working within a climate of strict public sector budget control, the challenge with the Metropolitan Police Service has been to deliver compliance as cost effectively a possible.

In order to deliver this strategy, we conducted an initial audit of the Services’s systems, processes and procedures and their compliance status. The audit process enabled us to plot a route map to a position of enhanced compliance and this included for the development of the existing Asbestos Management Plan, the development of a Training Needs Analysis and the development of a corporate plan for the central asbestos register.

We have now created a good working partnership with the Health and Safety Management team within the Property Department and aim to continue this “esprit de corps” with them to deliver on the compliance enhancements identified during the initial audit.

Bespoke reporting and ensuring that the MPS asbestos register is kept up to date are two of the essential criteria being delivered to the client. Due to the change in the portfolio of assets, a programme of refurbishment is underway with the need to conduct Asbestos Refurbishment / Demolition Surveys and asbestos removal project management supervision.
