The client and project
St George’s, University of London, is the UK’s only university dedicated to medicine, science and health. It is based on the site of a busy hospital, allowing students to experience a clinical environment throughout their studies. Environtec has worked with the university to decontaminate risers on various floors of the Hunter Wing, as well as to install fire batt seals to floors.
Key challenges and solutions
As a busy hospital, buildings are often occupied around the clock. This has meant we have had to arrange for works to be performed during very specific periods. To make this happen, we also liaised with on-site security teams to ensure access.
We also had to work with maintenance operatives to ensure that services were isolated to specified areas, while not causing disruption to other parts of the building. We used asbestos trained electricians and plumbers to make this process as seamless as possible. Some areas adjacent to works remained occupied, so these needed to be monitored using asbestos air testing and segregated with clear signage.
Because St George’s has different asbestos register data software, to display all asbestos works information on site, we liaised with the client’s IT department to ensure data was transferred in the correct format.
